Residents can expect traffic delays on Main Road as the state Department of Transportation embarks on an $8.1 million project to repave 15 miles of the road in Riverhead and Southold towns.

The project, which involves removing the top layer of pavement and replacing it with new asphalt, started Tuesday in Cutchogue in Southold Town. It will go from Tuckers Lane in Southold west to Doctors Path in Riverhead.

Correction: An earlier version of this report indicated the project would start in Riverhead, but it started in Southold Town.

It is one of two major repaving projects taking place to help “maintain the integrity of Main Road on the North Fork,” according to the DOT.

The agency is also prepping for a similar project aimed at repaving Main Road from Tuckers Lane moving east to the end of Main Road, a 14-mile stretch at a cost of $6.9 million.

The project will be completed in three-mile sections with work taking place during off-peak daytime hours, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., in an attempt to minimize delays for commuters.

“The priority is to just shift the lanes temporarily and keep one lane open in each direction, though [that is] physically not possible at all points,” DOT spokeswoman Eileen Peters said.

The DOT will be remarking bike lanes and visible pedestrian crosswalks, and for added safety, a rumble strip will be incorporated on the centerline to warn motorists who stray across into oncoming traffic, according to a release from the agency.

The work is being performed under contract by Intercounty Paving Associates of Hicksville, Ms. Peters said.

The second project for the eastern end will be completed by Posillico Civil, Inc. of Farmingdale, according to an agency release.
