Anastacia Smith

Lifelong Riverhead resident Anastacia (Berezny) Smith died Sept. 6 at Riverhead Care Center from complications of a stroke. She was 89. 

Born April 24, 1925, to John and Anastasia (Shepish) Berezny, Ms. Smith grew up on the family farm on Mill Road and was the last survivor of ten siblings.

She was a homemaker who loved taking care of her house and family. Ms. Smith enjoyed sewing, cooking, and canning and took great pleasure and pride over the years in her many flower gardens.

Ms. Smith loved all animals: domestic and wild, especially Schöne, Heidi, Fritz and Simba. She also enjoyed and took delight in watching the many birds and squirrels who shared her backyard feeders.

After her husband retired in 1982, they spent many winter seasons in their Florida condo. Ms. Smith enjoyed traveling and going to casinos as well as seeing plays and concerts.

Ms. Smith was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Harry in Nov. 2013 and is survived by her daughter, Carolyn; her sister-in-law, Anna Berezny and many nieces and nephews.

The family received visitors Sept. 8 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 9 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Burial took place at the church cemetery.
