It’s not often your local football team makes it onto national television. But that’s exactly where Riverhead Blue Waves’ seven-year-old Police Athletic League football team was on Sunday morning, when it made the trek into New York City for an appearance on Fox & Friends.

“Fox reached out to the P.A.L.’s of Nassau and Suffolk County and asked if we have a team that can be on the show,” Mr. Psaltis recalled. Ed Powers, Riverhead’s P.A.L. representative, volunteered the seven-year-old team since it was the only Riverhead team that had a bye last weekend.

Twelve members of the 15-member squad left Tanger Outlets at 4:30 a.m., said coach Shane Psaltis. They were on the Sunday morning show from 7:30 a.m. until 10:15, running plays and hitting dummies in the background for the cameras.

“Literally, they were little T.V. stars,” said Mr. Psaltis. “They were treated like little superstars. We were getting texts, our Facebook pages were blowing up. It was great.”

Sunday was opening weekend for the National Football League, and the segments on Fox & Friends related to safety for youths playing football — for which former NFL running back Keith Elias was on set — grilling out for games, and other topics.
