Flanders News: Fundraiser to benefit the Fountaine family

Happy September. I hope everyone returned to school without too many tears — kids and moms alike. I wish everyone a great school year. Funny how now that it’s September we’re having the hottest days of the summer. Oh well, it was a great summer weather-wise, even if we didn’t hit 90 degrees. I’ll take it over shoveling snow and dealing with ice any day.

Some events at the Flanders Senior Center during September include line-dancing Mondays at 1 p.m.; drawing class Tuesdays at 10 a.m.; shell painting Thursdays at 10 a.m., along with nutrition discussions at 10:30 a.m.; and horse racing Friday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. Those celebrating a birthday in September will enjoy a party Friday, Sept. 19, with music by Tom Parris. There will also be a huge yard sale Friday, Sept. 26, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Transportation is available and lunch is served every day. For more information, call 702-2375.

A fundraiser to benefit the Fountaine family, who lost their home and many possessions in a fire back in June, will be held Oct. 24 at Riverhead Polish Hall from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person. There will be dinner and a chinese auction. The organizers are looking for donations for the chinese auction. If you’d like to support the family, call Gundula Summerlin at 697-0424, Joyce Russell at 384-8893 or Robin Berkeley at 655-5631. This is just one reason why I love living in this community. When tragedy strikes, the community rallies and helps out in the time of need. Let’s all help this family and show them the love that we have for one another.

The Southampton Youth Bureau is now taking registrations for Act TWO’s fall session. Act TWO is a drama group where teens perform, write screenplays and use improvisation for the purpose of teaching peers and others in the community about issues teens face every day. Performances are held at various locations throughout the township. Participants will have the opportunity to see other professional theater groups on Long Island and New York City. Act TWO is free for any Southampton Town resident in grades 8-12. The group meets every Thursday between 6 and 7:30 p.m. at the Hampton Bays Community Center. Classes began Sept. 4, but it’s not too late. Registration is ongoing but is required in advance. For more information or to register call SYB at 702-2421 or visit southamptontownny.gov/youthbureau.

Happy birthday to Greg Meyer today, Sept. 11; Ryan Shea on Sept. 15; Debbie Setek Fleming and Debbie Keitel on Sept. 16; Chrissy Slee and Marsha (my other Mommy) Mickoliger on Sept. 19; Tracy Lorenz and Ron Harrison on Sept. 21; Tracy Wanat on Sept. 22; and Anthony Pace on Sept. 24. I hope everyone has a wonderful day doing whatever makes them happy.

Thank you for reading my column and for all those who have contributed to it. Have a great weekend. Please remember to drive safely and put those cell phones down.
