A 49-year-old man was caught stealing cigarettes and a Beatles CD from a car on East Main Street early Wednesday morning, Riverhead Town police said.

The man ran from police and was found hiding in the bushes near a house, according to a police report.

Police got a call from a witness about 5:10 a.m. who told police she saw a man — later identified by police as Anthony Jenkins — enter her neighbor’s car and was still inside the vehicle. Cops got to the scene and Mr. Jenkins ran, according to a police report.

He was caught “a short distance away” while hiding in a bush, police said.

Mr. Jenkins, who police said is homeless, was caught with the stolen items and arrested. He was charged with petit larceny, a misdemeanor, and held on $250 bail after being arraigned in town court.

Mr. Jenkins had previously been arrested last November after he turned himself in and admitted he stole speakers from a car and then sold them, Southampton Town police had said.
