Art Beat: ‘Maritime Madness’ coming to Greenport Harbor Brewing Company

• “Perception,” a group exhibit featuring artists from the Alex Ferrone Photography Gallery, will be on display Sept. 20 to Oct. 14 at the Jedediah Hawkins Inn barn gallery. 

Works featuring various subjects, styles, printing techniques and photographic processes will be included. Participating photographers are Michael Edelson, Rich Faron, Scott Farrell, Alex Ferrone, Ray Germann, Gerry Giliberti, Katherine Liepe-Levinson, Harold Naideau, Jim Sabiston and Steven Schreiber.

A reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.

• Call for artists and craftspeople: East End Arts is accepting submissions for its upcoming Holiday Gift Boutique, which will be open Nov. 15 to Dec. 23 at the Riverhead gallery. One-of-a-kind handmade ornaments, greeting cards, jewelry, wearables, ceramics and giftware are sought.

• Anne Tedesco will present “Saturday Afternoon Piano Music” at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Poquatuck Hall in Orient. The program is part of the Poquatuck Hall Concert Series produced and directed by Jane Smith.

Ms. Tedesco, a teacher and performer, will play music by Tchaikovsky, Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Mussorgsky.

• Cindy Pease Roe of Greenport and Wendy Small of New York will show their work in “Maritime Madness,” a pop-up art event hosted by Greenport Harbor Brewing Company. The exhibit will coincide with the annual Greenport Maritime Festival and run through October. It will feature Ms. Small’s abstract paintings of the “great-masted ships of the past” and Ms. Pease Roe’s “luminous paintings and vintage poles,” according to a press release.

• Husband-and-wife artists Andrea Cote and Pierre Cote of Flanders will present “Out of Time” from Sept. 20 to Oct. 26 at Art Sites gallery in Riverhead.

The exhibit will show Ms. Cote’s series of new photographs using collaged segments of photos and negatives she created in 1998 and Mr. Cote’s found-object sculptures, according to a release. “Both artists explore a personal mythology, where the stories uncovered speak to a collective and universal narrative.”

An artists’ reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, during which, at 6, Ms. Cote will create an object-based performance about time, loss and memory. The exhibit will continue through Oct. 26.

• Musicians and music lovers are invited to participate in The Coltrane Legacy Project at East End Arts School in Riverhead. The free demonstration series, presented by education director Shenole Latimer, will focus on the renowned jazz saxophonist and improviser John Coltrane. The series is sponsored by East End Arts and the John Coltrane Home Foundation.

Sessions will be held at East End Arts School Sunday, Sept. 28, 1 to 1:45 p.m., for ages 5-8; Sunday, Oct. 5, 1-1:45 p.m., for ages 9-14; and Wednesday, Oct. 8, 5-6 p.m., for age 15 to adults.

Participants are encouraged to bring instruments, but no formal knowledge of music or jazz is required. Three electronic keyboards will be available.

• A ‘Budding Artists’ exhibit is on view at Southold Free Library through Oct. 30. The artists are students of instructor Patricia McCarthy, who leads art workshops sponsored by Friends of the Library.

• Call for artists: North Fork Community Theatre in Mattituck invites submissions of two-dimensional work depicting the historic Mattituck building for a juried art show. The submission deadline is Oct. 1. Artists may enter up to three works measuring no more than 24 inches square.

Architectural renderings will also be eligible for an award and will be considered for use as a logo.

• Dodds & Eder in Sag Harbor will be the site of Peconic Public Broadcasting’s first-ever Mixed Media Art Show at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. The event is billed as a celebration of East End artists and their communities. Bonnie Grice, host of Eclectic Café on 88.3 FM, WPPB public radio, will be broadcasting live from Dodds & Eder.

All entries — which includes paintings, sculptures and photography — were judged by regular members of the Media Mavens show on WPPB, including Suffolk Times and Riverhead News-Review editor Michael White. The event will feature art for sale, with proceeds split between the artists and WPPB.
