Wading River News: Here comes autumn
In the words of C.K. Auto in Wading River, “Can you believe summer is over?” How true. August is gone and we started September with small periods of heat spikes. But for the most part, summer is also gone and the weather is gorgeous, feeling more like autumn.
‘Happy back to school’ to all the students in Wading River and Shoreham. Good luck and have an outstanding year.
North Shore United Methodist Church in Wading River describes school as “a place with tomorrow inside.” These wise words are from retired SWR teacher Diane Burkhardt.
Shoreham Fire Company No. 3’s 9/11 Memorial honors all those who lost their life that tragic day. Annually on Sept. 11, the company holds a beautiful ceremony. Locally, we grieve Kevin Williams of Shoreham; James Cappers of Wading River; Rocky Point High School (my alma mater) students Samantha and Lisa Egan, daughters of Liz and David Egan; and Joanne Ahladiotis, RPHS’s Class of ’92. Personally, I knew a young man named Michael Curtin, who graduated from Rocky Point’s first senior class in 1975. Mike was a fearless leader from the get-go. It doesn’t surprise me that this Marine and police officer stayed in the building to rescue people. Kevin Williams of Shoreham is someone that I have come to know through his wonderful parents, Pat and Mike, who live a stone’s throw from the memorial at the corner of Tesla Street. They have done extraordinary work with the Kevin Williams Foundation, assisted by many supporters working endlessly to help the needy. To those affected in any way by this tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001, enough cannot be said to console your hearts so I leave you with God bless you all.
Wading River residents Carl and Debbie Whiffen and others attended a special event at The Maples in Manorville. A barbecue was held to raise money for Seeds of Hope Tanzania Outreach, an organization that supports the needs of orphaned children in Africa. Seeds of Hope was started in 2006 by Debi Mazura, answering a call in her heart to “do something.” The organization supports children with shelter, water, nourishment, health services and education. Happy birthday to Sydney Mae Murphy, who turned 1 on Sept. 14. Sydney’s mom and dad, Liza and Tim, hosted a backyard party that was attended by many. The kids swam and played while the adults conversed with neighbors and relatives. Everyone had a nice time. Sisters Summer and Sienna shared in the day, as well as Sydney’s brother, Timmy. Have a wonderful year, Sydney!
