George D. Atkinson

Longtime Riverhead resident George D. Atkinson died at home Sept. 18. He was 72.

Mr. Atkinson was born in Riverhead Jan. 20, 1942, to Ralph Atkinson and Helen Porter.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964 as a private first class and was a dispatcher for Riverhead Fire Department. He was also a member of the fire department’s Eagle Hose Company.

Mr. Atkinson was predeceased by his wife, Sandra, in 1998; and his son, Gregory, in 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Tina Atkinson, of Hampton Bays; his brother, Ronald Atkinson, of Cutchogue; and his sisters, Patrica Harvey of Marathon, N.Y., and Mary Lambertson of Manorville.

A graveside ceremony was held Sept. 23 at St. John’s Cemetery in Riverhead.

Funeral arrangements were handled by McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.
