Riverhead police say an elderly woman had her pocketbook stolen out of her car as she was stopped at a red light in downtown Riverhead Tuesday morning.

The suspect remains at large and detectives have asked anyone with information about the theft to come forward.

Police say the victim was waiting at the traffic light at the intersection of Court Street and Osborne Avenue about 11:50 a.m. when an “unknown person” opened the passenger door of her vehicle and took her pocketbook from the front seat.

The suspect — who was not further described by police — fled on foot. Police ask anyone with information about the theft to call 727-4500 ext. 633. All calls will remain confidential.
