Riverhead News: 16th annual 5K for breast cancer

16th annual 5K Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness, sponsored by Tanger Outlet Center, will be held Sunday, Sept. 28, at the outlet center. Registration begins 7:30 a.m.; opening ceremony, 8:45 a.m.; and the walk, 9 a.m. For more information, call 631-208-8889 or visit northforkbreasthealth.org. Do consider participating and enjoy refreshments, giveaways and so much more. Registration is $25. 

On Sunday, Sept. 28, between 4 and 5 p.m., James Shepherd, pianist and graduate of Manhattan School of Music, along with two vocalists, will fill the historic sanctuary at First Congregational Church of Riverhead with inspirational sacred music. Tickets, a $10 donation, can be purchased at the church office. Call 727-2621 for information. An artists’ reception will follow.

The Long Island Sound Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, will host a membership drive beginning Wednesday, Oct. 8. Those interested should email Colleen and Jim at [email protected] or call 631-928-1411 for more information. Membership offers a great way to meet new friends while having fun singing. Practices are held Wednesdays from 7 to 10 p.m. at Bishop McGann-Mercy High School, 1225 Ostrander Ave., Riverhead

It’s that time of year again! VFW Post 2476, at 620 Parkway St. in Riverhead, will host its chicken barbecue Saturday, Oct. 4, from 3 to 6 p.m. Cost: adults, $15 (includes half a chicken, corn on the cob, baked potato, keg beer or soda); children, $5 (includes hot dog, corn on the cob and soda). Junior Vice Commander Brian Smith welcomes everyone to this event. For more information about the barbecue or if you’re interested in joining the VFW, call Brian at 727-2229. He’ll inform you of the guidelines/qualifications necessary for becoming a member. There will be a 50/50 raffle as well as a cash raffle. Hope to see you there.
