Got drugs? Riverhead police collecting unused pills

The Riverhead Police Department is hosting a free drug collection day this Saturday for residents to safely get rid of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medication.

Police say the initiative will protect families and the environment by safely clearing out potentially dangerous drugs. Riverhead police are requesting residents to check the back of their medication bottles for expired drugs, though they must be pills or patches. No needles, liquids or sharps can be accepted.

Locals can bring the unwanted drugs to police department headquarters at 210 Howell Avenue on Saturday, Sept. 27 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

There will be no charge for the service and drop-offs are anonymous, “no questions asked,” police said.

The collection is the ninth time in four years the department is hosting a drug collection day, police officials said. Additionally, there is now a canister in the Riverhead police lobby for residents to use when the department isn’t holding a drive.
