A husband and wife from Rockville Center were rescued from Long Island Sound Sunday night hours after becoming stranded on the water while boating, Riverhead Town police said.

Police were called to Wading River near Creek Road about 10:20 p.m. by a family member of 66-year-old Gary McMullan and 58-year-old Kathryn McMullan, who said the couple didn’t return after going boating about 4 p.m.

The Riverhead police dive team, along with Suffolk County police marine and aviation teams, Wading River and Rocky Point firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard searched the area.

The teams searched for more than five hours before the Coast Guard found the couple about a mile offshore north of Herod Point, according to a police news release. Riverhead police Det. Tim Hubbard said the couple’s boat had broken down when the motor failed.

The McMullans didn’t need medical attention and were reunited with family members, police said.

“It was pretty rough out there, pretty choppy,” Mr. Hubbard said. “It was a good find.”
