Helen S. Wazlo

Former longtime Riverhead resident Helen Wazlo of Greenport died Sept. 26. She was 99 and had been a resident of The Shores at Peconic Landing for the past 7 years. 

Ms. Wazlo was born March 8, 1915, in Riverhead Anastasia (Slavonik) and Myron Mysliborski and grew up on the family farm on Sound Avenue. She married Raymond in 1939 and for 70 years, lived at the home he built for them.

Family members said Ms. Wazlo was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. They said was an excellent cook and was especially proud of her artwork and awards received while she was at Peconic Landing

Ms. Wazlo’s family also said she  was revered by many family members for her thoughtfulness and readiness to help out at joyous, as well as sorrowful family events. She didn’t have any children, but family members said she “like a second mother” to her nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her husband in 1982 and her eight siblings, John, Frank, Bruno, Theodore, and Edward Mysliborski, Alice Krusjeski, Stephanie Murphy, and Anna Pekunka; she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family received visitors Sept. 29 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass was held Sept. 30 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, officiated by Father Richard P. Hoerning.
