UPDATE: The 19-year-old Riverhead man who police said was shot twice in the back Friday night as he was walking home on East Avenue is in critical condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson said Saturday afternoon.

ORIGINAL STORY: A 19-year-old Riverhead man was shot twice in the back Friday night as he was walking home on East Avenue, Riverhead police said.

Officials said they responded to the scene at 11:34 p.m. after receiving a report that someone had been shot, according to a police news release. Upon arrival, the victim, Deivi Perez, was discovered to have two gunshot wounds to his back, police said.

Mr. Perez told authorities that two unidentified Hispanic men shot him as he was walking home, police said.

He was taken by Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center and later transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center for surgery, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the shooting call 631-727-4500, ext. 610.
