Calverton News: It’s an orange East End

The East End is orange, with pumpkins everywhere! The weather feels so nice, along with the smell of the leaves, crispy apples, etc. Enjoy!

I’m a very proud grandma. My little Julia won first prize in the pumpkin-decorating contest at the Riverhead Country Fair in the 4-and-under category! She did it all by herself, except for the cutting and positioning of the pumpkins. She painted (chair included, oops), decorated, and made the perfect Olaf from the movie “Frozen.” Congratulations on your first-ever blue ribbon. You’re following in the footsteps of your dad and Auntie Jamie, who entered the very same contest when they were kids.

Happy ‘Howl-O-Ween!’ Kent Animal Shelter is hosting a party and open house on Sunday, Oct. 26, from noon to 4 p.m. There will be tricks and treats for children and pets, scenic river family pet photos, raffle baskets, and lots of fun! Come see Kent’s beautifully renovated kennels and grounds, and maybe, just maybe, bring home a new friend! The rain date is Nov. 1.

Due to rain, Riverhead High School’s Class of 2015’s “powder puff” football tournament fundraiser was canceled and will now take place in the spring. I’ll update you with more information as the date approaches.

Pulaski Street and Roanoke Avenue elementary schools are currently hosting a “Help a Hero” food drive for veterans through October. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off in the lobby of Pulaski Street School. It would be awesome if you could donate.

Belated happy 86th birthday to Helen Cabaret, who celebrated Oct. 2, from your daughter, Pat, and all your family and friends. We hope you had a great birthday.

Happy birthday to my cousin Larry Taylor Jr. on Oct. 26 and Joey Quinn (aka Abbott) and yours truly on Oct. 28. God bless us as we turn another year wiser, better and smarter. I love you both. Happy birthday to us!

Get well wishes to my buddy Rick Sujecki. I hope you heal soon. Those stinking woodchuck holes can sneak up on you when you’re not looking where you’re walking. We love you, Rick, and enjoy your sense of humor.

That’s all for now. Be safe and I shall talk to you next time. Bye.
