Riverhead senior Amanda Dickerson, a midfielder/defenseman on the lacrosse team, signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her sport next year at Pace University.

Dickerson will be a part of a brand new lacrosse team at Pace, a Division II school located in Pleasantville, N.Y. In 2013, the university announced it was adding women’s lacrosse and field hockey to its athletic program and both of those teams are scheduled to begin in 2015. The lacrosse team will debut this spring with a home game against Nyack College.

Dickerson quickly gravitated toward lacrosse after attending a clinic at the high school, her mother, Nancy Dickerson, said.

“She came out, got in the car and asked, ‘Can we go buy a stick?’ Nancy Dickerson said.

Riverhead lacrosse coach Ashley King said Dickerson was one of the strongest leaders on the team.

“She’s very unselfish and thrives on being a behind-the-scenes workhorse,” she said.

Pace University is currently in the process of renovating its field to a synthetic surface with lights that will have new seating and a press box. Both of the school’s lacrosse teams and soccer and football teams will play on the new field. The lacrosse team has a roster made up entirely of freshmen this season.
