UPDATE, 1:20 p.m.: Riverhead Police said a Mastic Beach man was killed Wednesday morning when he collided with another car in Baiting Hollow.

Christopher Savage, 46, was driving his 1999 Lincoln westbound on Sound Avenue when he lost control of the car and crashed with 28-year-old Caitlin Minton, who was driving a 2007 Toyota, according to police.

A medical examiner pronounced Mr. Savage dead at the scene.

Ms. Minton was transported to Stony Brook Hospital by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation of the crash is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Riverhead Police detectives at 727-4500, ext. 321.

ORIGINAL STORY: One person was killed this morning in a two-car crash at Baiting Hollow Hill, state police and Riverhead chief David Hegermiller have confirmed.

According to police, the accident — which involved a Lincoln and Toyota — occurred at 8:08 a.m. They expect Sound Avenue, between Fresh Pond Avenue and Edwards Avenue, to be closed for about three hours.

Police, ambulance and fire fighters responded to the scene. No further details were immediately available.

Another crash occurred nearby in Calverton, on Route 25 near Fresh Pond Avenue. No serious injuries were reported in that accident.

Wednesday morning’s crash comes about two weeks after an RV driver veered off the road trying to avoid a deer crossing the street, and the steep and windy stretch of road was also the spot where another fatal accident occurred a few years ago.

Check back as more information becomes available.
