Cops: Officer locates man who fled during traffic stop

An 18-year-old Riverhead man accused of fleeing police on foot during a traffic stop earlier this month was arrested on multiple charges last Tuesday after being located by an officer, according to a Riverhead Town police report.

Cristhian Diaz Paz was arrested at police headquarters about 9:40 a.m. and charged with reckless driving and third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer, police said.

An officer tried to stop Mr. Diaz Paz at around 12:30 a.m. on Northville Turnpike Dec. 7 but he reportedly abandoned his vehicle and escaped on foot, according to a report.

His vehicle was later impounded.

The same police officer involved in the original incident located Mr. Diaz Paz and brought him into the station on the pending charges last week, police said.

• About $7,000 worth of designer sunglasses was reported stolen from a Main Road eye-care center early last Thursday, according to a report.

Police said security camera footage revealed a man with a shaved head, who was wearing a winter coat, broke into Sound Vision Care through a window about 1:25 a.m.

Twenty pairs of Maui Jim sunglasses, and $100 cash was stolen from the business, police said.

Detectives are investigating.

•Someone reportedly kicked in a basement window at St. Isidore Church in Riverhead last Saturday, police said.

Although they weren’t able to gain access to the church, about $350 in damage was reported about 7 a.m. Sunday.
