Nick Charkow Jr.

Former Northville resident Nick Charkow Jr. died peacefully in his sleep Dec. 14, 2014, at his home in Zephyrhills, Fla. He was 87.

He was born in Northville, Sep. 5, 1927, to Anna and Nick Charkow. Mr. Charkow served in the U.S. Army for two years, during which he was stationed in Germany. He married Doris (Beckwith) Aug 29, 1948, in Riverhead.

Mr. Charkow drove interstate trucks for Ray McKay and worked at Welch Asphalt in Riverhead, where he gained knowledge of road construction. From there he started working for Suffolk County Highway Department, retiring in 1991 as a district foreman. Family members said in his spare time he enjoyed side jobs, such as providing dump truck service and installing aluminum storm windows under his business, Aluminum By Charkow (ABC). Family members said the extra spending money helped fund some nice vacations.

According to family members, Mr. Charkow was a man of varied interests. He sang in the choir at Riverhead Methodist Church, and spent summer weekends boating with family and friends. Nick enjoyed horseback riding, and as a member of The Sunrise Trail Riders, he rode with Wyatt Earp at Freedomland U.S.A.

Family members said Mr. Charkow; his wife, Doris; and their three children enjoyed traveling. traveling. He often visited his children when careers took them in various locations, including Kansas, Texas, California, and Europe.

Mr. Charkow remained active in the New York Army National Guard, where he attained a rank of sergeant first class. He was also active in Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

When his wife died in 1991 Mr. Charkow moved to Florida, where he met and married Victoria “Vickie” Dahl.

In addition to Vickie, Nick is survived by his sons Stephen of Riverhead, and Russell of Aquebogue; his daughter Dianne of Southampton; and his sister Steffie Pasquali of Riverhead.

Chapel service and interment will take place at the Calverton National Cemetery, at a time and date to be announced.
