Calverton News: Happy holidays from staff at Riley Avenue

I would like to wish everyone a beautiful Christmas. May it be full of love, laughter and joy. I love that Christmas feeling — the way total strangers smile at each other and extend their greetings. Even though it’s a crazy and frantic time, Christmas makes my heart feel good. I love seeing the little ones trying so hard to be good, knowing that not only is Santa watching but so is that little red elf on the shelf.

The staff at Riley Avenue Elementary School wishes everyone a wonderful holiday and a nice, long vacation. After tomorrow, school will reopen Jan. 5. Enjoy each day and come back ready to learn in 2015!

Have you gone to Kent Animal Shelter yet to get your new best friend? If not, you can still help out while having a great time. Kent will host an “Evening of Comedy” to raise money for homeless pets on Friday, Jan. 30, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Hotel Indigo in Riverhead. The event will feature comedy by Laughter Saves Lives, hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, chinese auction, raffle, pet boutique, scavenger hunt and more. The cost is $30 in advance or $35 at the door. For tickets and more information, call 727-5731. Jaime, Robbie, yours truly and my two grandkids went to the hotel for brunch with Santa, who was simply perfect. Many of the children didn’t know if they should laugh or cry. The majority of them chose the latter.

Happy birthday wishes go out to my daughter-in-law, Jaime, who celebrates on Dec. 27. I adore you, Jaime. You’re a wonderful wife and mommy. Birthday wishes also go to my son, Robbie, on the 28th. I very much enjoy all that we do together and send my love to you. Finally, happy birthday to Karl Koehler, also on the 28th. Thank you for the great memories, Karl; we miss you! May each of you have the best birthday ever!

Best wishes for a wonderful Hanukkah to all those who celebrate. Enjoy each special day.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year! Take care, be safe, and I shall talk to you next time — Jan. 15, 2015!
