Man lying on tracks killed by LIRR train

photoA man lying on the railroad tracks was run over by a Long Island Rail Road train last night, killed on the scene after appearing not to avoid the westbound train.

According to LIRR spokesman Sal Arena, a train was heading from Greenport to Ronkonkoma when it struck a man between 10:20 and 10:25 p.m.

“MTA Police said the man was lying across the tracks near Mill Road west of Riverhead Station and made no effort to move as the train approached. The engineer sounded his horn but was unable to stop the train,” according to Mr. Arena.

The man has not been identified by MTA police, who are still investigating the incident.

According to Mr. Arena, the train left Greenport at 9:39 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Ronkonkoma at 11:02. There were six passengers on board the train, who were transported to Ronkonkoma via bus.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by a Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
