Frederick Smith

Frederick Smith of Calverton, son of Allen Sr. and Victoria (Townes) Smith was born Feb. 8, 1939, and departed this life Dec. 30 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead after a brief illness. He was 75.

He was born in Calverton and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1958.

Frederick worked his entire life. In his early years he was employed at Treat Factory in Calverton. After the business closed, he went on to work for Bachman Company, until an opportunity arose and he took a position with Riverhead Town. He retired in 2011. Family members said while at work, Frederick could always be found by following his whistle.

Frederick was an avid and lifelong New York Mets, Knicks and Giants fan. Family members said that, like his mother, he was always watching a 24-hour news television station. Sports and politics were his two most popular conversation topics.

Frederick was predeceased by his older brother, Allen Jr. He leaves to mourn his daughters, Pamela (Andrew) Langhorne and Frederica (Rodney) Rollins, both of Riverhead; three grandchildren, Dana and Rodney Rollins, and Maurice Langhorne, all of Riverhead; his aunt, Almeade Francis of Bay Shore; his sister-in-law, Leenell Smith of Riverhead; his cousins, Gerald Townes of Long Island and Walter Brown and Christine Blocker, both of Virginia; his nephews, Anthony and Michael, of Riverhead, and Ronald and Barry, of Florida; his nieces, Angela, of Florida, Anna, of Riverhead, and Renee, of North Carolina; and a host of family and friends.

The family received visitors Jan. 5 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home for visitation and a funeral service, officiated by Pastor A. Charles McElroy. Interment was at Riverhead Cemetery.
