Cops: Man steals roommate’s car, crashes it

A unlicensed Riverhead man is facing a felony grand larceny charge after stealing his roommates’s car and crashing it on Route 105 early Sunday, according to Riverhead Town police.

Abel Neira, 25, crashed a 2000 Volkswagon Jetta about 3:20 a.m. and then fled the scene, returning back to his West Main Street apartment, police said.

Police discovered that Mr. Neira had stolen the vehicle from a roommate, according to Det. Dave Freeborn. He was later located and arrested at their apartment.

Mr. Neira was arrested for fouth-degree grand larceny, a felony, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with property damage, police said.

He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of a neck injury that he sustained in the accident, and then held for arraignment, authorities said.
