Wading River News: Curl up with a good book this winter

Well hello, dear readers. It’s nice to be back. I truly missed you and being able to attempt to be entertaining and informative in this space. I trust that your holidays were relaxing and joyous spending time with your family and friends during this festive season.

I’d like to thank everyone who sent me information or tips during 2014. I do appreciate your announcements and your assistance.

It’s not news to anyone that January has been mighty cold, with snow here and there but mostly icy, frigid temperatures. One of my favorite books I’d read to my children when they were young was “The Polar Express.” That’s what we’ve been going through lately, a Polar Express arctic blast.

Speaking of good books, from the reference desk of North Shore Public Library comes the words, “Snow is falling, books are calling.” There’s not much to do outside so a great way to spend your winter hours might be curling up next to a fire (or with your blanket) with a great book. The library has a wide variety of programs, materials and events offered to all NSPL cardholders, including books and films. Shoreham-Wading River residents should check their January/February 2015 brochure for information.

January is the annual call to get fit, make a resolution and finally trim down. We are urged to exercise, get moving and eat healthier for a trimmer version of ourselves in 2015. There is so much information on this topic that is available at the library. NSPL is open Monday through Friday, with many hours also offered on the weekend. Check the NSPL website at http://northshorepubliclibrary.org.

Quite a few years ago Jerry McGrath, a retired teacher from Wading River Elementary School, decided to become a licensed sea captain. One of the many things Jerry does is take people out to great destinations to fish. He also teaches a Suffolk County course called “Sportfishing Adventures.” In its 31st year, the course has caught the attention of more than a few. Jerry is so good at teaching the course that he has been voted Teacher of the Year. He is also an award-winning digital photographer. We congratulate Jerry for being recognized for his ability to teach and wish him continued success with fishing and photography.

That is about all I have room to say. I hope you stay well and warm until we meet here again in this space.
