Riverhead firefighters were called to the County Center in Riverside, where a building was evacuated about 12:50 p.m. Monday after a second-story fire broke out.

Though the fire was contained to a small area and brought quickly under control, Riverhead Fire Department Chief Joseph Raynor said “there was quite a lot of water damage.”

Suffolk County fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.

Two windows in the second floor of the Juliette Kinsella Records Storage Center were left open and fans were being used to air out the building as of 1:30 p.m. as firefighters were preparing to leave the area.

Workers were still waiting outside at that time, waiting to return to work. One worker who declined to give a name said the building’s sprinklers activated in the fire.

Water could also be seen dripping from the ceiling in the building’s lobby.

No injuries were reported. What records burned was unclear.
