Riverhead’s athletic director, Bill Groth, was recently named a 2014 Zone Award recipient by the New York State Council of Administrators for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance during a banquet in Verona, N.Y.

Groth was cited for leadership and vision through actions such as the “Wave to Wave” mentoring program. He has also implemented an elementary school dental hygiene program and “Heartlinks Project” with Stony Brook University, while facilitating a New York State Education Child Nutrition Department grant.

In 2013, under Groth’s leadership, the Riverhead physical education department was granted the first “Project Fit America” award in New York State to reverse the lack of fitness among youth.
Groth worked to help develop a physical activity/classroom break to address the obesity crisis while promoting the benefits of activity and was recognized by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services for having “exceptional health and wellness programs.”
