The Bishop McGann-Mercy girls basketball team fell to Port Jefferson Friday night in the first round of the Class B playoffs.

The League VIII champion Royals cruised to a 57-31 win over the Monarchs to advance to the semifinals against No. 2 Babylon Monday. Mercy, which made the playoffs for the second straight year, closes the season with a 6-13 record.

“From where we were at the beginning, to where we wound up at the end [of the season], I think we made a lot of progress,” said Mercy coach Matt Brisson. “The kids started to jell together, and still have a ways to go, but we have taken steps in the right direction.”

Friday’s game marked the end for Mercy’s two seniors: Delaney Macchirole and Emily St. Louis. Macchirole scored six points. Junior Juliana Cintron-Leonardo led the team with eight.

“The younger kids are hungry,” Brisson said. “They are players who want to get better.”

The Royals, led by sophomore Jillian Colucci (15 points) and Courtney Lewis (18), managed to beat the Monarchs’ press to score on the break.
