Riverhead News: ‘Project Cinder-ella’ class set for Feb. 20

Lifelong Riverhead resident Ann Griffin will celebrate her 100th birthday on Feb. 26. She was born in 1915 in Riverhead to Martha and John Stravinske and was married to Russell Griffin for 58 years. He was the love of her life and she misses him every day. She now divides her time between Riverhead and New Bern, N.C. Ann likes to travel and visit with family and enjoys dining out. Her two daughters, Maureen Seaman and Lorraine Griffin, two grandchildren and their spouses, and three great-grandchildren will all be with her in New Bern to help celebrate her special milestone. When asked about her secret to longevity, she said, “I grew up on a dairy farm having raw milk, cream and real butter every day.” Another secret is “good scotch.” Ann reads the News-Review faithfully. Her family thought it would be fun to mention her special day in the column and surprise her. Sto lat!

Riverhead Free Library has received a portable sewing machine, a hand-held machine and two dress forms to assist in redesigning prom dresses for its “Project Cinder-ella” classes, the first of which was held Feb. 13. The next one will be held Feb. 20. The students are receiving assistance from a senior who is a seamstress and the dresses are coming along nicely.

Other RFL news: The library hosted the Long Island Siberian Husky Club Feb. 10 and teens are working hard for the Advance Battle of the Books competition. The library offers plenty to do for all ages. For more information on upcoming events, visit riverheadlibrary.org, call 727-3228, or stop in and pick up a flier. They would be happy to assist you.

Beth Ryan’s first-grade class at St. Isidore School recently collected new books to send to the children of “Project Sunshine.” This nonprofit organization provides free programs to children facing medical challenges. Items sent to the organization help to serve as a distraction from the children’s hospital routines and help to put a smile on their face. With help from the entire school, the students were able to collect 515 books.
