Riverhead News: Teens compete in Battle of the Books

Kelly Wooten and friends Mary Higgins-Maresco and Tom Higgins traveled to Paris, France, March 4-8 to celebrate Mary’s birthday. The trio toured Notre Dame and enjoyed the beautiful architecture and stained glass windows. At the Louvre, they saw the Mona Lisa and all the other beautiful pieces of art. They viewed the Eiffel Tower at night, which was simply spectacular with the lights flashing. No trip is complete without shopping along the Avenue des Champs-Elysees and taking time to enjoy dining to make this milestone birthday extra-special for Mary. Kelly took lots of pictures to remember the wonderful trip so that her family could enjoy them, and brought home a bottle of French wine for Easter for her mom, Barbara Wooten.

On March 13, the Riverhead Free Library teens, aka “Birds of Pay,” competed in the Suffolk County Advanced Battle of the Books. The team included Nico Bossey, Cesar Flores, Evelyn Jaffe-Kennedy, Philip Kenter, Brandon Lynn, Ryan Lynn, Jose Manucha, Keely McCabe, Angelika Osiniak, Alexis Schmidt and Mary Kate Teresky. Team members read three books and prepared by meeting at the library for several weeks answering trivia questions about the books. They were coached by youth and family services librarian Joyce Rienzo and assistant coaches Paulette Sherman and Kayleigh Teresky. The team would like to thank the Friends of the Riverhead Free Library for their continuing financial support of this program.
