Shirley (Nienstedt) Densieski, a lifelong Riverhead resident, passed away suddenly March 25, 2015, at her winter home in Arapahoe, N.C. She was 78.

Shirley enjoyed gardening and planting, especially orchids, for which she had a green thumb. Mostly, Shirley loved family. She and her husband of 59 years, Sonny, did everything together, along with their loyal dog, Buttons.

Shirley was an art and substitute teacher at St. John the Evangelist School in Riverhead. She was a great mother, bringing up two boys, Teddy and Eddie, along with four granddaughters, Lesley, Jessie, Cassie and Jamie. She also leaves behind two daughter-in-laws, Joann and Annmarie.

Shirley and Sonny were the “Iron Man Welding” duo, a fixture at Riverhead Raceway for over 30 years. Shirley even acquired the nickname “Mrs. Iron Man.” Together they touched many lives.

Shirley always put family and friends before herself. She will be remembered as a smart, quick-witted, generous soul and will be missed by many. Shirley will be forever in our hearts.

The family received visitors March 29 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service was held March 30 at the funeral home. Burial took place at Calverton National Cemetery.
