John R. Boyd Jr.

John R. Boyd Jr. of Riverhead died March 20 at Southampton Hospital. He was 71. 

John’s life began in Brooklyn. He was born Nov. 15, 1943 to John and Dorothy Boyd. John started his adult career as a master window decorator at Macy’s Department Store in New York City. He also designed sets for rock videos.

John later became a New York City police officer in the roughest section of the city during the 1960s and 1970s, a turbulent period in NYC history. He was a member of Police Benevolent Association.

John’s artistic talents were abundant as a sculptor, painter and restorer of old buildings and wooden boats. He works were seen in many galleries from New York City and Brooklyn to the Hamptons and L.I.’s north shore. He was also the owner of Antiques and Things and had homes on the North and South forks.

John will be remembered mostly for being a great friend who would put himself in harm’s way for another.

Predeceased by his son, Kenneth, John is survived by his son Gregory, of California; his partner, Debbie Ezra of Riverhead; his brother, William, of Queens; his sisters Patricia Hogan of Fla., Elaine Mundorf of Colorado, Christine Hall, also of Colorado and Kathleen Lambert of Brooklyn; and his nieces and nephews.

Private cremation arrangements were handled by Twin Forks Cremation Services in Cutchogue.
