Joseph A. Esquirol Jr.

Judge Joseph A. Esquirol Jr. of Mattituck passed away April 13, 2015 at his home. 

Judge Esquirol was born in Brooklyn and was the only child of State Senator Joseph A. Esquirol and Louise Downs Esquirol.  Raised in Brooklyn, Judge Esquirol graduated from Berkshire School, Trinity College, Class of 1954, and New York Law School, Class of 1959.  He was admitted to the Bar of the State of New York in that same year.

During his time in Brooklyn he had been active in many organizations, including Kings County Democratic Party, Brooklyn Bar Association where he spent six years on the Board of Directors,  Protestant Lawyers Association and was one of the first males to join Brooklyn Womens Bar Association.

He was also active in Boy Scouts of America, Brooklyn Kindergarten Society and Society of Old Brooklyn Heights Association.  Since his retirement to Mattituck, he had been active in Peconic Bay Power Squadron, Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Church of the Redeemer.

Judge Esquirol was predeceased by his wife Susan Farrell Esquirol and is survived by his second wife, Thayer Hobson Esquirol; his two daughters, Jacqueline Esquirol Slaga and Janet Esquirol Sylvan; and three grandchildren, Ryan Edward Slaga, Katelyn Louise Slaga and Elizabeth Cyan Sylvan.

Funeral services were held April 17 at the Church of the Redeemer, with the Rev. Nils Blatz officiating. Interment was in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

The Esquirol Family requests that memorial donations be made to East End Hospice.
