Jean Poliwoda

Jean Poliwoda of Southold died on April 18 in her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was 90. She was born Dec. 1, 1924, to Anthony and Josephine (née Szablinska) Kalinowski.

Jean was predeceased by her loving husband, Alexander Poliwoda, Oct. 13, 1995; her brothers, Joseph and Stanley Kalinowski and her sister, Anne Fulton. She is survived by her four children, Daniel (Ruth) Poliwoda of Southold, Thomas (Roxy Bumble) Poliwoda of Greenport, Kathleen (Harold) Sloan of Castleton, N.Y. and Patricia (William) Witzke of Southold; her loving brother, Anthony Kalinowski of Valley Stream; eight grandchildren, Kenneth (Barbara) Poliwoda, Kelli (Ed) Baumann, Adriane Soriano, Brad (Cristine) Sloan, Melanie (Nathan) Cintron, Brian (Colleen) Witzke, Steven (Christina) Witzke and David (Nicole) Witzke; 10 great-grandchildren and three more not yet born, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Jean loved gardening, sewing, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, the game show Family Feud and especially loved spending time with family and friends.

Jean was special to all who knew her and she touched many lives with her loving, compassionate and caring ways.  She will continue to be a precious angel on our shoulders and will be cherished forever.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. with the Rev. George Gaffga officiating. Entombment will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Southold.

Memorial donations may be made to Southold Fire Department or East End Hospice.
