On his last Opening Day, Riverhead Little League president Tony Sammartano had some advice to share.

To parents: Enjoy these chilly spring days with your young kids. These will be the best memories.

To the audience: Take the time to volunteer with the Little League for your own children or your community.

And — most importantly — to the kids: When you get older, you’ll have to choose which sports to pursue. But for now, don’t worry about that. Just have fun.

“And do well in school,” Mr. Sammartano said.

The Little League kicked off Saturday morning, with each of the teams marching out onto the field to applause from their families.

It was an unusually bittersweet event. Though the day honored the kids and coaches, many of the Little League’s administrators pleaded for more volunteers to keep the longtime Riverhead tradition afloat.

Last week, Mr. Sammartano announced he would be stepping down after nearly 15 years behind the helm as president.
