Riverhead News: Meet the Breed program wows students at library

Congratulations to Sharon (Bilunas) and Mark Wilinski on the March 6 birth of their son Austin Ryan, weighing 7 pounds 5 ounces. Big brother Adam is very excited to have a baby brother. Grandparents Wanda and Ziggy Wilinski and MaryBeth and Bert Bilunas are also excited about the addition to the family.

Congratulations also to Amy (Wooten) and Marco Guecha on the birth of their daughter, Emma Lizbeth, who arrived April 18 weighing 7 and a half pounds. Emma was due April 29 but decided to enter the world a little sooner. Her big brother, Alex, is thrilled she is home and Grandma Barbara Wooten is delighted. All agree she is very sweet and adorable.

On April 14 Riverhead Free Library’s “Meet the Breed” program presented Riverhead police officers — two in uniform, two in fur. Officer and handler John Dosinski, with Vaki, his K9 patrol dog, and officer and handler John Morris with his dog, Rocky, gave a fine demonstration of teamwork. The dogs, both German shepherds, give 100 percent devotion to their handlers and to protecting us. The officers are to be commended for their 24-hour care and training to keep the dogs “on the ready.” In the audience were 12 students and adults who were amazed at the dogs’ size, the constant eye contact with their human partners, the commands given and the demonstration of the dogs’ skills based on their gift of scent.

The Battle of the Books at Riverhead Free Library will have a signup May 1 for grades 6 through 9, at which time the book titles will be given out. Meetings will be held June 22 and 23. For more information call 727-3228.
