THUNDERCOLTS 14, BLUE WAVES 7

The Half Hollow Hills girls lacrosse team is made up of players from both Hills West and Hills East high schools, which presents one problem: what’s the team name?

Hills West is the Colts. Hills East is the Thunderbirds.

The solution? Thundercolts.

The Riverhead Blue Waves experienced plenty of thunder Thursday at Riverhead High School. Half Hollow Hills raced out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back in a 14-7 Division I victory.

The Thundercolts evened their league record at 5-5 with the key win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Riverhead fell to 4-7 with three games remaining.

Riverhead returns home Tuesday with a game against Ward Melville.

The Thundercolts got four goals apiece from Jennifer Cassadonte and Casie Caiazza, two of the team’s four captains. Cassadonte is a fifth-year varsity player who’s attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall.

Cassadonte struck quickly, scoring the first two goals for Half Hollow Hills. Her second came on a nifty spin move that ended with a bounced shot past Riverhead’s goalkeeper.

The Thundercolts led by as many as 10 in the second half, prompting a running clock. The Blue Waves, led by three goals from junior Courtney Troyan, scored the final three goals of the game.

Riverhead eighth-grader Kayla Kielbasa scored two goals.

Riverhead has been without senior Rachel Doroski. She tore her ACL in a game against Longwood April 15, according to coach Ashley King. Doroski had been a key player on attack for the Blue Waves.
