Art Beat: Riverhead gallery seeking work for new show

Call for artists: East End Arts seeks work for its juried all-media art show, “Novel Materials/New Techniques.” The show will run from June 19 to July 31 in the Riverhead gallery. Margery Gosnell-Qua, artist and curator of Suffolk County Community College’s Lyceum Gallery, is the guest juror.

Gallery director Jane Kirkwood said in a press release: “Maybe you’ve created your own unique process — or you’ve repurposed materials intended for uses other than making art. All artistic innovation in any genre is welcome for this exhibit.”

Up to three original works per artist in all media — including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, video and sculpture — may be submitted Thursday and Friday, June 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the gallery.

For a prospectus and more information, go to Events at eastendarts.org or contact Ms. Kirkwood at 727-0900 or [email protected].

• A quilting lecture and workshop will be hosted by the Eastern Long Island Quilters’ Guild Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, at the Southold Town Recreation Center in Peconic.

Fine art fiber artist Vickie Mathas of Mt. Laurel, N.J., will be the guest speaker/presenter. Saturday’s program will be “Materials, Mediums and Mixing It Up” trunk show and demonstration at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Ms. Mathas will lead a “Complex Collaged Cloth” workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The guest fee for Friday is $5. The workshop fee is $50. For details or to register, email [email protected].

Call for young artists: Entries are sought for the Arts Alive LI 2015 Poster Contest, whose theme is “I Love Long Island.” Open to students in pre-K through grade 12, the contest is sponsored by Arts Alive LI, a program of the Long Island Arts Alliance.

There will be prize winners in each of three age categories. Winning posters will become part of the organization’s commemorative poster series and will be exhibited in October at the Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City.

According to LIAA executive director Theresa Statz-Smith, the contest is “best suited to those who draw, paint and specialize in graphic art or photography.”

Each artist may enter one piece; there is no entry fee. The entry deadline is May 22; digital submission is preferred. For guidelines and entry form, go to artsaliveli.org/poster-contest.

Call for artists: Artists of all ages are invited to sign up for the annual Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival hosted by East End Arts. The event is set for Sunday, May 24, in downtown Riverhead, with a rain date of May 25.

Chalk “painters” work in squares marked out along Main Street in Riverhead. Artists must register in advance to be matched with a sponsored square on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration deadline is May 14. Squares will also be available for $20 the day of the event.

Chalk and blending materials will be provided; kneepads are recommended.
