Woman struck in parking lot dies from injuries

Update, Wednesday, 11:10 a.m.: Stony Brook University Hospital officials confirmed Wednesday morning that Martha Garcia has died.

Original story: A pedestrian was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after she was struck and knocked unconscious by a pickup truck in the parking lot outside the King Kullen store in Riverhead Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Martha Garcia, 51, of Hampton Bays was hit by a woman driving a 2015 Chevy Silverado pickup truck about 12:15 p.m., according to Riverhead Town Police. The driver told police that Ms. Garcia had stepped in front of the truck while she was driving through the parking lot of the Route 58 shopping center.

An unconscious Ms. Garcia, who was lying in the street when emergency workers arrived on the scene, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, but later airlifted to Stony Brook because of the severity of her injuries. The driver was uninjured and no charges have been filed.
