Police are asking for the public’s help after they said a mentally disabled Riverhead man went missing nearly one month ago.

According to Riverhead police, 59-year-old Eric Burton boarded the S92 bus headed toward Greenport on Friday, May 8, around 8 a.m. in front of his home at 724 E. Main Street.

He hasn’t been seen since.

According to Lt. Rick Boden, the department has “exhausted pretty much all of its investigative leads … at this point, we’re kind of at a dead end.”

He said police “have been actively investigating this — we’ve been in touch with the national clearinghouse [for missing persons] — but we can’t find out what happened after the time he got on the bus.”

Mr. Burton is described as about 5-foot-8, 190 pounds. He has brown eyes, and while a photo provided shows him with hair, he is now bald with missing teeth. He was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, blue jeans, a white t-shirt and white sneakers.

According to information provided by police, Mr. Burton enjoys riding trains and may have boarded a train west toward Brooklyn, where he has family. Police said he may be in need of medical attention.

Anyone with information about his disappearance is asked to call police at 727-4500.
