Leroy Harris

Longtime Riverhead resident Leroy Harris died June 13 at Riverhead Care Center. He was 89.

Mr. Harris was born in Virginia, but his family moved to Riverhead when he was a toddler. He attended Riverhead schools and later served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Harris worked for many years as a groom at a local horse farm where family members said his gentle ways allowed him to develop a special relationship with the animals under his care. He continued to work at various farms until well into his 80s.

A burial service for Mr. Harris will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at Calverton National Cemetery.
