Two people were hospitalized Thursday following a two-car crash in Riverhead on Route 58, Riverhead Town police said.

Heavy rescue efforts were required after the vehicles collided shortly before 6:30 p.m. near the Target shopping center, police said.

The driver and passenger of one of the vehicles suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

At around 7 p.m., police at the scene confirmed one victim was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center and the other was either going to be taken to same same hospital or transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital.

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle weren’t taken to the hospital, police said.

The Riverhead Fire Department also responded to the scene and a portion of Route 58 was closed during the rescue efforts.
