UPDATE: No charges issued in Calverton crash; police ID drivers

UPDATE, 6:15 a.m.: Police released the names of the individuals involved in Tuesday night’s crash in Calverton, as well as more details about what occurred.

No charges have been issued in the crash, which remains under investigation.

According to police, 19-year-old Calverton resident Charles Cali was driving a 2008 Toyota Camry eastbound on Route 25 when he veered into the westbound lane, hitting a 2002 Chevrolet pickup operated by a Miller Place man, 44-year-old Shawn Caffrey.

Police said that the Toyota continued in the westbound lane and struck a 2014 Kia Optima driven by 48-year-old Miller Place resident Sheryl Mullins. The Toyota hit the Kia head-on, police said.

Wading River Fire Department removed both Ms. Mullins and Mr. Cali from their vehicles and both were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. Both sustained serious injuries, police said.

ORIGINAL STORY: Route 25 is closed in Calverton between Route 25A and Kay Road due to a two-car crash, Riverhead Town police said.

One male driver and one female driver suffered serious injuries in the crash, which occurred about 6:20 p.m., police said. They could not be airlifted due to a lightning storm in the area and were transported instead by Wading River Fire Department ambulance to Stony Brook University Medical Center, police said.

The crash occurred just east of Kay Road near the Enterprise Park and no passengers were in the vehicles.

State police are assisting Riverhead police in the investigation. Manorville Fire Department assisted in the rescue efforts.

Traffic was also slow up nearby Wading River Manor Road in Wading River Tuesday evening with traffic signals down where that road meets with Route 25 and also with Route 25A.
