Suffolk County Historical Society executive director leaving post

The Suffolk County Historical Society will be looking for a new leader soon, as executive director Kathryn Curran is moving on, although she’s not moving that far away.
Ms. Curran will be taking the position of executive director with Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, a non-profit organization that was established in 1987 and based in Hampton Bays. It supports the study and preservation of Long Island history, with an emphasis on Suffolk County.
“I am excited to start a new challenge within the Gardiner Foundation and look forward to working with the board and staff to direct their important services,” Ms. Curran said in a press release. “I am fortunate to be joining such a respected non-profit organization.”
Joseph Attonito, board chairman of at the Gardiner Foundation, said in a statement: “Kathy’s expansive experience and knowledge about the local history community has already made her a key addition to the Gardiner team.”
Ms. Curran took over as executive director in 2011 at the Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead after having previously been the society’s public programs and exhibition development coordinator.
She had replaced Wallace Broege as executive director of the historical society. He had held that post for 32 years.
“The Suffolk County Historical Society Board of Trustees is both saddened and delighted by Ms. Curran’s new career opportunity,” the release states. “The Board of Trustees will be mounting a search for a new executive director in the fall.”
