Riverhead News: Knights of Columbus awards scholarships
The Riverhead Elks Lodge was proud to present to the Salvation Army Food Pantry a donation of $300. Loreita Vaughan, corps commanding officer of the Salvation Army, came to the lodge to accept the donation, funded by a grant the lodge had received. Lodge members on hand were Tom Kurpetski, John Hubbard, Theresa Hubbard, Diane Allen, John Apicello, Rich Zbikowski and Jim Kane, who are proud to help the Salvation Army.
The Riverhead High School Class of 1950 celebrated their 65th class reunion July 16 at with a luncheon at Meeting House Creek Inn attended by 33 class members. Some brought guests and enjoyed reflecting where the years have gone. Louise Leja had the honor of reading the names of the 43 deceased class members. Edith Bess from the Shinnecock Reservation came as well. This group meets every five years and hopes to be together in 2020. Congratulations to all!
The Riverhead Moose Lodge will host a paint night July 31 at 6 p.m. Tickets, $45, include all supplies and snacks. Anne Marie Fischer, again helping the Riverhead Moose with fundraising projects, invites you to attend for a fun evening. The Riverhead Free Library will host more nook events throughout the summer, including “Booked for Lunch” on Fridays, July 24 and Aug. 14, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to bring lunch. The adult and information services librarians will introduce some of the latest fiction and non-fiction books available for checkout. No sign up is required.
The next book discussion at Riverhead Free Library, featuring “I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban,” by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb, will be held Wednesday, July 29, from 7 to 8 p.m. Malala, a Pakistani activist for female education, is the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate. St. Isidore School will hold a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Camp Aug. 3 to 7 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for students enrolled in grades 5 to 8 in the fall. Projects will include DNA, computer coding, bridge-building and architecture. The registration fee is $50 (checks made payable to St. Isidore School) and space is limited, so register today. The Knights of Columbus Chapter 928 will present two $500 scholarships to students from McGann-Mercy and St. Isidore on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m. at the American Legion hall on Hubbard Avenue. Applicants submitted an essay titled “The Responsibility of a Catholic Citizen in a Free Society.” Scholarship money will be applied to tuition at the schools.
The annual fund drive for the Riverhead Fire Department is on the way. Members rely on donations to support their activities. The fire department covers 48 square miles and last year answered 1,167 alarms. Members spent 19,300 hours on training and other activities.
