The next phase in Peconic Bay Medical Center’s expansion into Manorville was unveiled Friday afternoon.

A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the soft opening of the Grossman Imaging Center, the latest facility on the campus that first opened nearly two years ago in an effort to bring quality health care closer to residents who would otherwise have to travel to Riverhead or Stony Brook.

Andrew Mitchell, president and CEO of PBMC Health, said that the imaging center offers numerous services, including screening and diagnostic imaging, digital mammography with 3-D imaging, advanced ultrasound and lowest-radiation computed tomography (CT). The facility is located behind the Gertrude and Lois Feil Campus for Ambulatory Care building.

“From the technology, meaning the equipment, to the philanthropists and the design to the staff that we’re putting here, I am completely convinced that this will be one of the most preeminent facilities in our healthcare system,” Mr. Mitchell said during a press conference.

Later this month the Grossman Imaging Center will undergo a “soft open.” It will be fully operational and admitting all patients after Labor Day, Mr. Mitchell said.

The Grossman Imaging Center is the third of four expected buildings at the Manorville center, the first one having opened in September 2013. Mr. Mitchell said the Gertrude and Lois Feil Campus for Ambulatory Care facility — the first PBMC building erected in Manorville — was built in an effort to bring healthcare to “an underserved area in the region.”

“We who live here on Eastern Long Island are getting to enjoy the benefit that most people only get to enjoy when they live in major metropolitan areas,” said John Kanas, who’s been a major donor for PBMC. “This facility is an example of that.”

The Grossman Imaging Center was named after the family who contributed most to it. Bob Grossman, his wife Lynn and their daughter Ali were on hand Friday.

“One of the best parts of serving on the board is seeing community members, like the Grossman family, dedicating themselves to the health of their family, friends and neighbors,” said Sherry Patterson, chair of PBMC.

The family also worked on the Cary Grossman Center for Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, a division of PBMC.

Ali Grossman, who led the toast of the new building, explained that she took a class at New York University in which a famous philanthropist encouraged everyone to put their name on their contributions, something the Grossman family previously didn’t do.

Later that week Ms. Grossman said she received two phone calls from community members thanking her for the facility.

“At that moment it dawned on me, that this is what this philanthropist was speaking about,” she said. “It was about encouraging a spirit of generosity and a spirit of giving back to the community.”
