Flanders News: Rubber Duck Race set for Aug. 29

Happy August, everyone! As a parent of a college student who is returning to school at the end of the month, August is a month mixed with excitement and anxiety.

I miss my daughter so much when she is away. The college is only five hours away but still, it seems like she’s across the country when she’s not here. I know the younger kids are a bit disappointed that school starts next month. It seems as though the summer went way too fast. There’s still a lot going on and a lot to do so I’m going to try to not let it get me down. Send me some happy news you’d like to share with the community so we can all celebrate with you. That’ll definitely lift everyone’s spirits.

The Friends of the Big Duck will host its Rubber Duck Race fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 29, at noon at the Flanders Men’s Club. The rain date will be Aug. 30. There is a donation of $5 for each entry but admission is free. Refreshments will be available. It’s a whole lot of fun and the club is gorgeous, so bring a chair or blanket, sit back, cheer on the rubber duckies and enjoy the view. Prizes will be awarded. To pre-register, call Ms. Fran at 727-5342. Also, check out their Facebook page or visit their website, bigduck.org.

The Flanders Fire Department/FRNCA Blood Drive Committee would like to thank everyone who helped make its July blood drive a success. Thank you to those who took the time to help save a life by donating blood; Neil Young, public service announcer; Meetinghouse Deli in Aquebogue, for donating food; and volunteers Joey C., Scott and Leo. Congratulations to Barbara from Riverhead on winning the family four-pack of Yankees tickets. Way to go, everyone! I’d personally like to say thank you to our wonderful volunteer organizations for all they do for our community.

Happy birthday today, Thursday, Aug. 6, to Kelly McAlister and Lisa Bilski; Cindy (Corwin) Jackson and Mary Edler, Aug. 8; Mike Lorenz, Aug. 10; Wayne Ford and Lisa Dabrowski, Aug. 11; Arlene Chastaine, Aug. 13; and the man who makes the best reuben and onion rings on the planet, Anthony Meras, Aug. 19. I hope you all enjoy your special day doing whatever it is that makes you happy.

Thank you for reading this week’s column. Be sure to get your family birthdays, anniversaries and other shout-outs to me as soon as possible. Have a wonderful weekend. Get outside and enjoy the summer while it’s still around. Take care and be safe.
