Veterans Discount Card now available for town residents

Veterans Discount Card

Riverhead Town is offering a new resident military veterans discount card that’s good for dental visits, car repairs and more.

The card, which was introduced last Tuesday, is available for free at the town clerk’s office.

Liz Stokes, who has worked at the Riverhead Free Library for nearly 30 years and is currently its patrons service coordinator, organized the town’s Veterans Advisory Committee last year in an effort to inform the nearly 2,000 veterans residing in the town about benefits and resources available to them — all in one place.

She said the idea for the discount card came after talking to veterans and finding out their needs.

“Our veterans aren’t getting dental services and aren’t covered for eyeglasses,” she said. “Our focus has been to make a difference in their lives.”

On Tuesday, Ms. Stokes estimated over 100 cards had already been given out.

Minuteman Press in Riverhead volunteered to print the cards and an anonymous donor paid for the cards “in memory of the unknown soldiers and the MIAs who did not get a chance to return to Riverhead,” said Ms. Stokes, who’s the daughter of a World War II veteran and sister of a Vietnam veteran.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this town to support this,” she said. “Our veterans deserve nothing less.”

Business owners interested in becoming a participating merchant for the Veterans Discount Card and residents interested in obtaining one can contact Ms. Stokes at 631-655-3263 or email [email protected].
