He started at 5 a.m. on Tuesday and has been playing since.

Darren Stakey, who performs under the stage name Stay Key, is playing the piano and singing live right now at Outerbanks Restaurant at Indian Island, hoping to play through tonight — 8:11 p.m. to be exact — to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Column: Singing his way into the record books

A countdown party is scheduled tonight at 7 p.m for the final hour and 11 minutes.

To qualify as a Guinness World Record required Mr. Stakey to meet a set of guidelines. The first proposal he submitted got denied. The original idea was to play the world’s longest concert. In the eyes of Guinness, the premise was too vague. So he narrowed it down to longest singing marathon and longest marathon playing keyboard/piano by an individual.

So watch him go for the record here, or head on down to Outerbanks to support him in person!
