Calverton News: Try freezing a tomato off the vine

I hope you’re enjoying some fresh fruits and vegetables from our local farm stands. They’re simply amazing. It’s a good idea to start thinking about freezing some of them. Did you know you can freeze tomatoes off the vine? Simply put them whole into a freezer bag, then during the winter you can have a little taste of summer! 

The Reichel family held its family reunion/barbecue Saturday at the Flanders Men’s Club. Everyone had a great time. Eighty-five relatives visited from throughout Long Island, Florida and Wisconsin and shared lots of laughs, kayaked, swam and jumped around in a bounce house.

Baiting Hollow Congregational Church’s annual chicken barbecue on Aug. 1 was a huge success! Attendees enjoyed some delicious food and can’t wait till next year.

Kent Animal Shelter will hold its annual Wines and Canines Dog Walk/Run Sunday, Sept. 20, at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard. The event is being held when the grapes are at their peak, which will make for a very pretty walk for a great cause. There will be all kinds of food, a chinese auction, adoptable pets and a pet boutique. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 27.

Happy birthday to my niece Holly White, who will celebrate Aug. 15. We love you and hope you have a great birthday!

OK, meteor shower fans, this is it. The annual Perseids meteor showers began in mid-July, peaked on Aug. 11 and 12, and will continue tonight, Thursday Aug. 13! These showers will be some of the best in 2015 so get out there and check them out. Enjoy!

My grandson, Aiden, had a great birthday weekend with his auntie Jamie and a few new friends. He also enjoyed a lot of beach time. We really did have a great weekend! Happy birthday, my little buddy.
