Two women were injured, including one with a broken foot, during a go-kart crash at Riverhead Raceway Sunday, according to officials on the scene.

The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. when one driver “spun out” and the other “had nowhere to go,” Raceway officials said.

The two drivers were adult women and both were conscious at the scene.

The driver with the broken foot was airlifted via Suffolk County police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital. The other driver was transported by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Raceway officials noted that crashes are not uncommon in the sport and that Sunday’s accident was not caused by an equipment failure or a safety mishap.

No additional details were immediately available.
